How to Remove Stubborn Stains from Carpets
DIY carpet stain removal using household ingredients

Carpet stains are inevitable, but they don’t have to be permanent. Here is a proven method for removing even the toughest stains using common household items.
What You Will Need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Dish soap
- Warm water
- Clean white cloths
- Spray bottle
Step 1: Blot, Do Not Rub
The moment a spill happens, grab a clean white cloth and blot firmly. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers. Keep blotting until no more liquid transfers to the cloth.
Step 2: Apply the Cleaning Solution
Mix one tablespoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the stain generously and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Blot Again
Using a fresh cloth, blot the area repeatedly. You will see the stain transferring to the cloth. Rinse the cloth and repeat until the stain lightens significantly.
Step 4: Baking Soda Treatment
For stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda over the damp area. Let it dry completely, then vacuum. The baking soda absorbs both moisture and odor.
Step 5: Final Rinse
Spray clean water over the area and blot one final time. Place a dry towel on top and weigh it down overnight.
Most fresh stains come out completely. Even old stains will look noticeably better after this treatment.
